I’ll take my blood in black and white

You have to hand it to crime dramas in the 21st century. They know their skeptical viewing audience.
We aren’t gullible.
Don’t just tell us the victim is dead.
Show us.
Crime drama execs have complied. When someone is killed, there is no doubt.
The corpse is deader than dead.
The Prude sees (peeking though fingers in front of her eyes) that the dead person has a tinge of blue in the face, eyes departed from sockets, innards that are no longer innards but outards, and is lying any-which-way in a pool of what The Prude keeps telling herself is ‘tons of catsup, just tons of catsup’.
But there is absolutely no doubt that the dead person is really most sincerely dead.
How naive we Perry Mason fans were! We caught a glimpse of a dead person in the black and white world lying on the floor, eyes neatly closed, possibly a slight trickle of catsup from a tidy hole somewhere in the head, or a smear of catsup on a white shirt.
And–silly us– when that dead person was pronounced dead, we believed it!
Why did it never occur to us to look more closely and wonder, “But maybe they aren’t really dead. Maybe that person is just sort of dead. Clearly there is not enough catsup, all their internal organs are still neatly encased internally, and the eyeballs are right where eyeballs are meant to be. Hence, I do not believe that victim is dead.”
We are no longer wet behind the ears. We no longer are required to suspend our disbelief. We’ve entered the wonderful world of verisimilitude.
And doesn’t it give you pause to wonder:

When Dorothy ‘killed’ the Wicked Witch of the East, was there any gristle or gore? Well?
Makes you think, doesn’t it?
Us cynical sophisticated types of the 21st century require much, much more.
Remember:
‘No tombstone until it's gruesome.’
REALLY most sincerely dead?

Queen Elizabeth, may we present President Roseanne?

Sixty years ago today Elizabeth ascended to the throne of England. Whether she wanted to or not, she was the Queen.
A year later Roseanne Barr was born.
That is just the beginning of the amazing links between these women.
Consider:
As the Queen celebrates her Diamond Jubilee, Roseanne celebrates her announcement that she is seeking the nomination of the Green Party.
She wants to be the president.
The Queen has had 1 husband, 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
Roseanne has had several husbands/paramours, 5 children and, according to her, 5 grandchildren.
During the Diamond Jubilee Year the Queen and Prince Philip will tour Great Britain while her family visit the Commonwealth, from Canada to New Zealand.
Roseanne plans to " barnstorm American living rooms."
The Queen raises Corgi dogs.
Roseanne says ‘Men aren’t dogs. Dogs are loyal.’

The Queen is generous. She doesn’t want the expense of the Jubilee to fall on taxpayer shoulders, so it will be privately funded.
Roseanne is generous.
She will, as president, forgive all student loans and all homeowner and credit card debt.
The Queen cares about health and encourages research on disease.
Roseanne cares about health and wants to legalize marijuana so women can  ‘integrate their divided  consciousness with a herb instead of doctors' pills that kill the liver.’
Celebrities love Queen Elizabeth.
The Spice Girls want to reunite for a concert in her honor.
Kathy Griffin and some girl from some show called ‘iCarly’ love Candidate Roseanne.
The Queen knows all the words to ‘God Save the Queen’, the national anthem of Great Britain.
Candidate Roseanne knows all the words of ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ and will no doubt learn the correct key in which to sing it by the time she is inaugurated as President.
Happy Diamond Jubilee Queen Elizabeth! Live long and prosper.
And... um, have a nice day, Candidate Roseanne.

Quick! Before it's Gone!

The schizophrenic winter of the midwest continues its bipolar lurch into a new month.
January gave us some snow, some rain, some ice, some cold, some record warmth, some clouds, lots of sun, and a general feeling that it was massively confused about its identity.
February is befuddled too and shows no sign of restoring equilibrium.

All of this means that when March comes roaring in it may find the lamb already firmly ensconced in the Upper Midwest, picking crocuses and planning picnics.
So before all trace of winter is gone I wanted to share a few photos from January that actually look like January.

Quick Bonny! Before it's gone!

The Circle of Lard

The Prude has a tough life.
This morning she is headed for her 3rd coffee date this WEEK.
Her grueling schedule doesn’t leave much time for a creative blog post.
But she wants to share some breaking news from Germany.
A retired 87 year old pharmacist there finally opened a can of lard he received in 1948.
Yup. The lard is 64 years old. It came from the US as part of its aid program to rebuild a ravaged Germany. The pig it came from has long ago disintegrated into the Circle of Life, but his lard remains.
And it is good.
Really. The lard is edible. And safe. As safe as 100% animal fat can be.
The retired pharmacist ate it on black bread.
Of course this raises all kinds of questions of exactly how discriminating 87 year old taste buds can be, but Herr Feldmeier, the brave consumer, instead wants us to think twice about throwing away food items past their expiration date.
The Prude has always suspected those dates were just part of planned obsolescence, to keep the food industry going as we dump perfectly good animal fats and replace them with new animal fats that we also won’t be able to consume in time.
But this morning she is in a pensive mood, and chooses instead to reflect on that post- World War 2 American pig, who gave his life for some lard that would sit on a shelf in Germany for 64 years.
Today an American Prude honors that pig.
The Circle of Life is complete.

I See Your Lek and Raise You a Qindarka

You immediately knew what is wrong with the title of this post, don’t you?
Since a qindarka, as anyone in outer Albania knows, is equal to 100 lek, this would be a pretty lopsided game of poker.
And you no doubt had a pretty good yock at my expense.
But does it hurt my feelings that you laughed boisterously at me? Nah. I’ll just boff heartily along with you.

Your ordinary man about town may not recognize the above bold-faced words, but a devoted Scrabble player who is eidetic (possessed of vivid recall) will have at least a nodding acquaintance with some.

That which is pyic is often xanthic, which means pus-ish stuff tends to be yellow.
If you see a chacma in a cwm on the side of a jebel you are, in the non-Scrabble world of language, looking at a baboon in a hollow on the side of a mountain.

You want to write a scathing commentary on the state of humankind via analogy using the chacma stuck, through no fault of its own, in the cwm which is stuck, through no fault of its own (but rather the fault of a cold and heartless glacier) in the mountain.
But with one thing (time to celebrate the yahrzeit, or anniversary of the death of an ancestor celebrated by Jews) and another (you are part of a busy and creative  krewe, a private group participating in Mardi Gras)
your magnum opus has shrunk to the size of a opuscule (a minor work).

Fracti are ragged clouds and gjetost is hard brown cheese and a fyke is a bag-shaped fishnet and all  are acceptable in Scrabble.

pfft and psst and sh and hm? Legit.
Alif, bubu, and a thousand others have no meaning but are still recognized. No doubt some ambitious Scrabble player with connections in the Scrabble Word Approval Department begged for them.

The Prude plans to cozy up to someone with clout at the Scrabble Dictionary and get kwa approved. It’s the sound made by the chacma trapped in the cwm.

When Life Gives you Sour Grapes

Sour Grape Salad at the 2:00 position on the plate

I was asked if my Super Bowl post yesterday could have a tinge of sour grapes.
Well, naturally!

And that got me to thinking.
What about those of us who refuse to enjoy Super Bowl Sunday with the bean dip, barbeque and beer  being prepared in massive quantities on the east coast?

We have to eat, but we absolutely refuse to partake in any Super Bowlish dishes.

So, all you glum folks whose football teams will not be in Indianapolis this coming Sunday–do I have a recipe for you!  It comes via my daughter-in-law’s mother, who made it for wedding rehearsal dinner. We had to forcibly remove the wedding party from the salad so we could get on with the show.

Sour Grapes Salad

8 oz. cream cheese
small tub Cool Whip
½ c. sugar
1 lb. seedless red or green grapes

Wash and dry grapes. Combine cream cheese, Cool Whip and sugar till smooth and lovely.
Fold in grapes and refrigerate.

There you have it. A little something to sweeten Sunday.
You may want to hang onto this one even if your teams are playing Sunday.
If your team loses it will sweeten Monday.

Super Bowl Slush

Dear N.Y. Giants and N.E. Patriots Fans,

Enjoy this week. It’s your final chance to believe anything is possible. The final countdown to untold glory or unmitigated misery. The last week when every ESPN channel, every TV Guide, every sports page features your teams. The waning few days to wear your team’s colors to work and to bed, when the Man on the Street in Indianapolis is interviewed to see if he knows which states comprise New England and the Woman on the Street is asked to guess the original cost of the Giants franchise ($500).

Enjoy it. Because next week at this time one entire group of you will be wallowing through the Slough of Despond, debating whether to join with fellow sufferers and rehash what should have been or sit alone in you room with leftover cheese dip, musing about the possibility that your state/region’s hockey/basketball/baseball team will reclaim the glory of your state/region. And thousands and thousands of ‘Super Bowl XLVI Champion’ shirts, hats, beer steins and key chains that were printed for your loser of a team will never see the light of day. So enjoy this week.

And you Champions? Enjoy the next few days. Enjoy the next year even. Enjoy the thrill of victory because it is ephemeral. In a couple of weeks most of the nation will be quite over its infatuation with you. In a couple of months entire people groups will not be able to name the victors of Super Bowl XLVI. And one of these years– 2013? 2014? Your team will lose. The glory days will be over. You’ll try to recapture the jubilation but alas. Nothing but hollow memories remain. You team is now as attractive as last week’s snowfall.

Enjoy this final week of walking in the clouds. Eventually you’ll land in the slush with the rest of us leftovers from Super Bowls Past. Your only compensation is knowing that the team who beat you will eventually be in the puddle with you.

Sincerely,
The Packer Fan in the Slush
